Nepal's Electoral Landscape Sees Significant Alliance Forged Between TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor
In a notable development ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the wake of widespread and fatal youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Address Young People's Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the grievances raised by the new generation. This promise follows the violent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.
"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.
The September uprising was triggered by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Details of the New Political Partnership
According to the official pact, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political class. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in setting up the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.
Wider Political Consultations Taking Place
In a related development, the current interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with several major political leaders. These talks involved former prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the protests.
Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a collective duty. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
