India's capital Wakes Up to Hazardous Pollution Following Diwali

On Tuesday morning inhabitants of the planet's dirtiest urban center found themselves inhaling severely hazardous air that registered in the "critical" level.

Alarming Air Quality Measurements

Various sections of the city showed an pollution measurement exceeding 500, which represents 10x the recommended limit recommended by the WHO.

Certain monitoring stations, readings of toxic particulate matter reached peaks of 1,800, representing fifteen to twenty times higher than acceptable levels.

Fireworks Prohibition and Current Policy Shifts

Beginning in 2020, officials had maintained a total prohibition on the purchase and ignition of firecrackers during the Festival of Lights due to their significant contribution to the deadly haze that covers the metropolis as colder weather sets in.

However earlier this year, the current city administration approached the supreme court to request a relaxation of the prohibition.

The suggestion was allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – which have been questioned by environmental experts as being only roughly 30 percent reduced emissions – as a middle ground between "heritage and ecological concerns".

Legal Verdict and Enforcement

To the disappointment of environmental and health advocates, judges approved the appeal, mandating that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be used during limited hours throughout the celebrations.

On Monday night, there was widespread violation of the time restrictions across the metropolis, with little regulation regarding whether the pyrotechnics being used were actually the more environmentally friendly variety.

Many recording stations throughout Delhi showed air quality reaching highest levels around midnight to some of the worst readings seen during celebrations in at least recent memory.

Regional Consequences

The proliferation of pyrotechnics during Diwali also triggered a blame game with bordering Pakistan, with authorities in Pakistani Punjab pointing to worsening air quality in their urban centers on pollutants originating in neighboring India following the festivities.

Long-Standing Pollution Problem

Extremely elevated readings of atmospheric toxins in the city have continued as a significant problem for over a decade and a half, with the condition showing no improvement.

Around celebratory seasons, the concentration of toxic particulate matter in the atmosphere has been observed to shoot up to 70% higher the peak records ever recorded in China's capital, which was formerly regarded as the globally most contaminated urban center.

Various Contamination Contributors

This crisis in the city is caused by a convergence of various sources including heavy vehicle emissions, construction debris, development work, garbage fires and haze from farm burning in nearby areas of farming communities.

In these regions, farmers illegally burn crop residue to clear them quickly, generating toxic haze that becomes contained over the metropolitan area as winter air descends.

Medical and Financial Impact

Public health and economic consequences on the approximately 33 million residents residing in the metropolitan zone is substantial, according to numerous studies.

The contaminated air causes elevated rates of nervous system, cardiovascular and respiratory disorders, and can potentially cause oncological diseases.

Air quality crisis is estimated to be causing 10,000 premature fatalities each year in Delhi.
