French authorities will start stopping small boats in English Channel after British demands
French officials have consented to begin stopping small boats in the Channel, following an extended period of pressure from the UK.
This policy shift follows the Prime Minister wrote to the French leader urging him to back the plan and saying there presently "lack any effective deterrent" in the maritime passage.
French security forces will be allowed to stop the migrant vessels at sea, but only before they've collected their passengers, according to authoritative confirmation.
French police have rarely intervened to prevent the overcrowded boats departing from the coastline because it is considered excessively high a risk to both officers and civilians.
"It is essential that we deploy these tactics this period... We have no effective deterrent in the Channel."
Currently, a French maritime police representative says officers will begin intervening at sea, with the objective of protecting lives.
Notably, the spokesperson ruled out the use of nets to intercept boats, which had earlier been reported as a possible technique to snarl the engines of the vessels.
The decision to take action at all is a significant step forward, coming after a short-lived change towards a more aggressive strategy this warmer season, which ceased when the previous government official left government.
This was demonstrated in July, preceding a meeting between the UK leader and French president, when French police were observed wading into the sea to slash the sides of a boat.
Now French authorities will once more be allowed to stop boats prior to they pick up asylum-seeking individuals from the coastal areas of France's north coast, however it's uncertain how the small boats will be prevented.
